Filling out a Youth Football Uniform

July 22nd, 2009

Have you ever gotten on an elevator with a pro football player? It can be a frightening and humbling experience. These guys are absolutely humungous. Sure, college players are big, but the pros are monsters. So, why is the youth football uniform basically the same size as the one the pros use?

College players look great in their youth football uniform, no one is denying it. But, at the same time, they never seem to fill out the pads just right. Something about the pads makes them look like they are growing wings. Are the uniforms too big or are the players too small?

Even more strange is the fact that when these young guys get drafted to the majors they almost magically appear to expand into their new uniforms. Gone are the gawky proportions and they join the ranks of the goliaths. There would seem to be only two possible explanations. Either the uniforms get smaller or the players get bigger.

The truth of it is that the players don’t grow physically. It is the boost to their esteem, acceptance as professionals that makes them walk taller, hold their chests out farther and fill their pro uniforms in the way that they never seemed able while wearing their old youth football uniform.
