Betting House Gambling: Beginners Guide to Games of Chance

April 28th, 2009

So maybe you haven’t familiarized yourself with gaming hall card-playing, then be sure to peruse the following —

By general definition a betting room is a structure that features gambling. Paying Customers can relax at the one-armed-bandits or alternate games. Gambling saloon games normally include methodically determined percentages informing them that safeguard the gaming hall retains an edge versus the guests.

More often than not, betting saloon games can incite you into being habituated rapidly. There is the good old 1-armed-bandit, a cash operated appliance with 3 or more reels which spin once an arm on its side is tugged. The gadget by and large rewards according to a range of glyphs displayed on the panel of the contraption. Unfortunately, gambling house games tend to push the apparition of influence, effectively tricking the customer — the victim is provided with choice, but in reality these won’t truly match up the customer’s statistical negative odds. That is caused by the the gaming hall not paying up the entire wager as hoped for. This theory will generally be seen at work in well known casino games such as five-card stud poker, dice games, roulette or blackjack.

Five-card stud poker is doubtlessly an immensely trendy casino game. The gamesters, playing with either fully or partially concealed cards, place bets in the pot which is ultimately given to the last gamester controlling the winning set of cards. (Obviously, the bluffer may actually win too…)

Commensurate with five card stud poker, blackjack too is an immensely popular casino game. A lavish amount of its approval is by virtue of its peculiar mix of luck and expertise and decision making, not to forget a routine labeled card counting. This is an approach by which gaming aficionados are in a position to actually reverse the odds of the game for their own ends both by betting & strategic decisions corresponding with the cards shown.

“Craps” is another extremely popular casino wagering game where you try to foresee the throw of two dice. Players bet on the score of one spin, or on a sequence of cycles of two dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there’s no reliable long term winning tactics you can play on to bend the odds.

Roulette is another well-known gambling pastime — a croupier revolves a roulette wheel enclosing a set of 37 (as applicable to European roulette) or thirty eight (American or Vegas roulette) separately tagged pockets in which a rolling pellet will then settle, announcing the winning number as well as its connected odds. If our player happens to place chips on a number which strikes it big i.e. it is indeed lucky, the payout is 35 to 1, the initial wager itself is paid out. Hence in total it is multiplied by thirty-six.

How Many Chords Are There, Anyway?

April 27th, 2009

Since chords (the main component of harmony) are one of the three most vital elements of music - the others being melody and rhythm - it would be useful to know how many chords there are. And it doesn’t matter whether you play piano or guitar or some other instrument - chords are chords.

It’s certainly not necessary to learn all the chords in the whole wide world, but it is necessary to learn some of them - at least enough to allow you to harmonize the songs you would like to play.

But meanwhile, there are 3 chords — just 3 — that you absolutely, positively have to know. If you don’t know these three, there’s hardly a song in the whole world that you could play. But by knowing just 3 chords, you can play hundreds, if not thousands of songs! And those chords are simply the primary chords in any given key:

  • The I chord (the chord built on the 1st degree of the scale)
  • The IV chord (the chord built on the 4th degree of the scale)
  • The V chord (the chord built on the 5th degree of the scale)

For example, if you were playing in the Key of C, the I chord would be C (c, e, g), the IV chord would be F (f, a, c), and the V chord would be G (g, b, d).

But as you probably know, there are thousands of other chords, so it would be helpful to at least know of their existence and maybe someday learn them.

So here goes:

Since there are 12 major keys one can play in (not counting enharmonic keys - keys that sound the same but are written differently), there are:

  • 12 major triads (a triad is a 3 note chord)
  • 12 minor triads
  • 12 diminished triads
  • 12 augmented triads
  • 12 diminished 7th chords (4 note chords)
  • 12 major 6th chords
  • 12 minor 6th chords
  • 12 dominant 7th chords
  • 12 major 7th chords
  • 12 minor 7th chords
  • 12 half-diminished chords
  • 12 9th chords
  • 12 flat 9th chords
  • 12 9th/major 7th chords
  • 12 9th/minor 7th chords
  • 12 11th chords
  • 12 13th chords
  • 12 suspensions
  • 12 flat 5th chords
  • 12 flat 5th maj 7th chords

If that’s not enough chords for you, remember that each chord can be inverted - turned upside down. So multiply all the triad chords by 3, and all the 4 note chords by 4, and all the 5 note chords by 5….

Then there are:

  • poly-chords - chords that combine two or more other chords, and
  • voicings - the way chords are positioned on the piano keyboard

And that’s just in one octave. A standard piano has 7 octaves, so multiply all that by 7 and you get the answer to how many chords there really are:

More than you can count.

But again, you don’t need to know them all. Just master enough so that you can play the songs you want to play, then gradually over time learn more and more chords. Your musical world will continue to grow and maturity as a musician will become obvious to others.

Actors 101

April 27th, 2009

Actors are said to be a dime-a-dozen. Everyone in the world wants to be an actor, and that’s why there’s so much competition in the field. There are thousands and thousands of headshots flying around and photo shoots and auditions, and to what purpose? Being cast for a script that was written by an amateur. A part in a film that will go no further than a few film festivals.

Actors don’t really have a choice, because they need to accept whatever roles are offered to them to get experience. They have to nod and accept any project that comes their way, even if it’s the worst thing they’ve ever read.

Of course, there are those occasions when our dear thespians go to those auditions and completely fall in love with the script. “I went in to audition because I heard about this project and the synopsis was really interesting. As soon as I got the script and I read the few words, I was totally into it. Then when I finished reading just those two pages… I knew I had to do this, I was in shock and in love with the writing,” says Martin Lobe, who auditioned for the role of Donald in Machiavelli Hangman (http://www.hangmanmovie.com).

“You go to hundreds of auditions and you hope you’ll hit that one gold mine… it’s not about the money as long as the writing is so good,” offers Martin James.

Having said all this, one would think that it’s definitely easier to work behind the camera than in front of it. Filmmakers make up their own destiny, they write or they find a good script and they go out actively looking for actors. Actors, on the other hand, have to simply wait there to be picked.

Casting Directors feel that it’s not so negative. If an actor is good, filmmakers will seek him out, it’s just a matter of polishing your tools and you will be found eventually. “Think of it as a more passive-aggressive approach to starting a career. You have to smile, and let them make the first step.”

While many would argue that Machiavelli Hangman or Pulp Fiction was all about the writing and it made the acting what it is, others claim that the acting made those films what they are. For instance, Lost In Translation would not have become the brilliant film that it is if it wasn’t for Bill Murray’s improvisational genius. The script is said to have been originally only 15 pages long and Murray had to fill in the gaps. That’s a lot of filling!

There is also a certain masochistic element to being an actor. You have to get used to getting rejected and you have to use it to get stronger. The rejection has to become a pleasure that you can turn into energy. “Some actors go in expecting to be rejected. They get a certain high from it,” Bob Fern-Jacobs, after auditioning for Lord of the Rings.

Actors, keep at it, get better. Build your experience, and they will come!

The Chances of Succeeding on the European Lottery and Does Anybody Stand a True Chance of Winning

April 27th, 2009

The probabilities of scooping up the Euro Lotto jack-pot is a far-off 1 in 76 million but the probability of acquiring a cash prize is a fairly decent one in twenty-four. When the jack-pot is not won in a given lotto draw, it is carried over to the following lottery draw which results in an ever increasing jack-pot prize. New regulations added on the 09-Feb-07 set the number of successive rollovers to 11, with the jackpot rolling down to lower prize levels on the eleventh lotto draw when the prize is not won.

The EURO MILLIONS lotto or the Euro lotto, as it is commonly recognized, pools the lotto ticket revenues of the nine partaking European countries presenting a immense Euro Millions jackpot. With the number of countries joining the Euro on the increase, that will without question will lead to new states partaking in the European lottery. A growth in the amount of people partaking in the European Lotto will result in a lasting growth of the already large Euro Lotto jackpots.

The new regulations also initiated European Super-Draw which happen twice yearly plus they offer jack-pots in the region of 100 million pounds. The difference with Super Draws is that the jackpot must be collected during the week of the lotto draw; as a result, if there is no lottery ticket corresponding, all the numbers drawn and top prize will be distributed to the lottery ticket bearer(s) in the succeeding winning prize level.

Every participant must pick out five primary numbers from one to fifty and 2 Lucky-star numbers from 1 to 9. During the lotto draw, 5 primary plus two lucky star numbers are then picked out at random from 2 draw machines containing numbered lottery balls.

Entertainers On The Rebound

April 26th, 2009

Everyone who starts in TV, radio or theatre eventually wants to make their way to Hollywood. This isn’t new; we’ve all seen transitions from the music industry, including J-Lo, Britney Spears, Beoncee Knowles, John Mayer, Bon Jovi, Madonna, Witney Houston and countless others. Generally, those artists who have specialized and mastered a certain craft have a hard time delivering in the film industry.

This is the same with Commercial directors like Michael Bay who was originally a music video/commercial director and then turned his focus to motion pictures by making films like Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and the latest The Island with Ewan McGregor. As a result, all his films feel like they are extended versions of those mini commercials and music videos he used to make. The cinematography is perfect while the editing is breathless and doesn’t give enough time to the viewer to digest all the information they are receiving.

Napoleon Dynamite was so successful with the audiences because it was the complete opposite of Michael Bay films. Instead of fast-paced editing, the camera lingered on the actors letting them settle into the scene and as a result letting the viewer settle into the scene as well. Machiavelli Hangman is another picture that is up for release later this year that will give its audiences these longer scenes with more focus on acting.

There are other films like Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and most likely his upcoming remake of King Kong that fall in a middle ground between fast-based Hollywood studio films and equally successful independent and quieter films like Napoleon Dynamite and Machiavelli Hangman (http://www.hangmanmovie.com).

Peter Jackson has always focused on motion pictures and that craft shows off in his ability to tie all the strings together. When the viewers sit to watch his films, they are entertained and they are also given enough material to think about it.

Madonna has had a tremendously successful musical career, but she began to venture into motion pictures with her debut with Warren Beatty in Dick Tracey. Then she made such films as Evita and Swept Away and on each occasion, critics bashed her performances and said that she should simply stick to her music.

There are other instances when the transitions prove to be the right thing to do. For example, Sam Mendes who was a prominent theatre director moved to Hollywood and was offered to do American Beauty by Steven Spielberg. That film that Spielberg proclaimed to be an instant classic went on to win an Oscar for Best Picture.

Sure there are exceptions, but the history of entertainment shows that it is more beneficial for artists to stick to what they know best, or they are bound to shoot themselves in the foot.

Gold Fever

April 24th, 2009

Songwriter Hits Gold with His Song “Gold Fever”

Long Beach, CA-Cyril May’s song “Gold Fever” is a lilting tune celebrating the obsession with gold that many have shared for more than a century. In the song, a man gives up his job, invests in all sorts of gold mining
equipment, and admits the desire to find gold rules his every moment.

“I got vacuum cleaners guaranteed to such gold

Like tornados suck up rocks for play.

Special Hammers for a breakin’ up stuff

Expose the nuggets to the light of day.

With my long hip waders like old Gumboot Bill

A water bag and gold pans too,

I’m loaded for bear and I’m a headed out there

Come along if you’ve a hankering, too.”

The man is shameless in his quest for gold, all around the United States and as far as Australia. With Cyril May’s lyrics and Jack McDonald’s catchy and whimsical arrangements, the tune is
fun. That’s why the Outdoor Channel plays it as the theme song of the ” Gold Fever ” show.

“Gold Fever” is just one of the many entertaining tracks on Cyril May and Jack McDonald’s CD “Off The Beaten Track”. Cyril May is an Australian living in Long Beach, California with his American wife Dottie, while Jack McDonald is Mexican born living in Australia with his Australian wife Cheryl. Roulette - The Basics

April 19th, 2009

Roulette is actually one of the simplest games in the casino to play, despite the busy-
looking table and multiple colors of chips used. The pace is fairly relaxed compared to
blackjack and positively glacial compared to craps. An added plus is that the tables are
usually not crowded. You can thus play for moderately long periods of time without
serious financial risk, even though the house edge is considerably higher than blackjack
or craps.

HOW TO PLAY ROULETTE

The wheel is divided into 38 evenly spaced slots into which the ball will eventually land.
Each slot has a number and color that matches corresponding numbers and colors on the
betting table. The numbers are from 1 to 36, with half black and half red. The remaining
two slots are for zero and double zero, both of which are colored green.

NOTE: Some roulette games have a wheel with only a single zero - no double zero. This
means the wheel will have 37 instead of 38 numbers, which effectively cuts the house
edge in half. You will find very few single zero games in Las Vegas, but if you find one,
jump on it. The house edge is only 2.6%, making it one of the better casino games to
play.

SPECIAL NOTE: The little Nevada Palace on Boulder Highway, across from Sam’s
Town, has a single zero roulette table open all the time.

The dealer spins the wheel and then spins a small ivory or steel ball around the rim of the
wheel in the opposite direction. When the ball finally comes to rest in one of the slots,
the dealer calls out the winning number and color and places a marker over that number
on the betting table for all to see.

There are many different bets indicated on the betting table, as follows:

* The individual numbers: you can bet on 1 number, 2 numbers, as many as you like

* The three marked columns of 12 numbers each

* The 1st Dozen, 2nd Dozen, or 3rd Dozen

* The high numbers, indicated on the table as 1-18

* The low numbers, indicated on the table as 19-36

* Even Numbers or Odd Numbers

* Red Numbers or Black Numbers (note that this excludes the 0 and 00)

Here are the odds paid on the various bets:

* Individual numbers pay 35

* The 12 number columns pays 2 to 1

* The Dozens pays 2 to 1

* The high numbers and low numbers pay even money

* The even and odd numbers pay even money

* The red and black numbers pay even money

Important Note About Odds in Roulette: All bets have exactly the same house edge
against you: 5.26%! That’s right - it makes no difference which bet you make, the
house edge is the same.

This is due to the presence of the 0 and double 00. These numbers do not win for any bet
except for if you bet them as a number. In other words, they do not count for high, low,
odd, oven, red or black, the dozens or the rows of 12 numbers.

Since these two out of the 38 numbers don’t count except as a number, this is what gives
the house it’s 5.26% edge. (2 divided by 38 equals 5.26%). Also, a winning on a single
number pays 35 to 1, while there are 38 numbers on the table, which again gives the
house it’s 5.26% edge.

You cannot overcome this edge in the long run, so just relax and place whatever bets
seem interesting to you (although we do have a recommended betting strategy, which
we explain in a different article).

Good luck!

Right-Hand Techniques For New Age Piano

April 19th, 2009

Recently, I had a student ask me to offer some techniques for using the right hand. Usually, it’s the left hand that causes the most difficulty but I had to think about it because up till then, I really did not have any “techniques” for the right hand.

I thought about it and tried to think about what I do as far as improvising with the right hand goes. Basically there are really only a few things you can do. You can:

1. Play single note runs - this is where you just play one note at a time

2. Play arpeggios - broken chords up and down the keyboard

3. Play chords - using 3rds or sixths or any combination of the chord-scale relationship

Different genres of music use the above techniques in different ways. New Age piano usually relies on a softer sound although there is a “minimalist” style that uses hard sounding chords in the right hand ala George Winston.

You see, the problem is that you have to know the numerical relationship between the root note and the rest of the notes that make up the chord to “know what you’re doing” on the keyboard.

A book I highly recommend, although it may not be on the market anymore is Alan Swain’s Four-way Keyboard system. It’s not an easy instruction book, but it is one of the best for how chords are constructed - thus allowing you to know when you are playing 3rds or 4ths and so on. Not necessary for making music, but nice to know anyway.
